Deadman Fire North of Flagstaff Burns 15 Acres (update)

June 18th, 2016 at 9:14 AM

At approximately 1445 on Friday, June 17th, Summit Fire and Medical District was dispatched to the report of a ¼ acre grass fire on Hwy 89 at mile post 435. The fire was reported on the east side of the highway and was in the area of Deadman Mesa. SFMD responded a Battalion Chief and two engines to the scene and called for more resources en route. Upon arrival of the first units, the fire had grown to several acers and was threatening structures in the Indian Hills community. Erratic winds pushed the fire aggressively as crews attempted to create containment lines and sfdextinguish the fire. With the help from the Forest Service; who responded multiple units including engines, water tenders, dozers, and a helicopter, crews were able to contain the fire while CCSO and DPS conducted evacuations of the nearby residences. The fire grew to approximately 15 acres and jumped the containment line at one point, but was quickly brought back under control.

SFMD would like to thank our partnering agencies of CCSO, DPS, and the USFS in the quick response of this incident. No structures were damaged and no injuries were reported from this incident. The Forest Service currently has the fire under investigation.

SFMD would like to remind the community that with the fire season upon us, to take extreme care with any source of ignition and to check the current burn restrictions in your area before participating in recreational activities.
