At approximately 2:00 pm this afternoon, an officer with the Flagstaff Police Department attempted to stop a vehicle in the area of 4th Street and 7th Avenue that was reported stolen out of Kingman. The vehicle pulled into a gas station and 3 passengers “bailed” out of the vehicle. The driver then fled eastbound on 7th Avenue but pursuit was quickly terminated for safety reasons. The 3 passengers were later determined to be residents at a local homeless shelter and claimed to be just catching a ride with the driver of the stolen vehicle. The driver was described as an Hispanic male wearing a black or blue hoodie and glasses. The vehicle was described as a gold Dodge Intrepid with handicap plates.
At approximately 2:45 pm, the vehicle was spotted in the Mobile Haven neighborhood. Officers were able to secure the area and lay out spike strips.
At approximately 2:50 pm, the vehicle crashed into a power pole near the intersection of Mountain Meadow Drive and Lynch. The driver was quickly taken into custody without further incident.
Residents in the area reportedly lost power for a time due to the crash.
