Update to Fatal car vs pedestrian accident in Flagstaff

UPDATE: 

The Flagstaff Police Department is investigating a fatal collision that occurred at Old East Route 66 and North Highway 89 involving a vehicle and a pedestrian. All roadways are open at this time. The pedestrian, identified as Ms. Merrie Gunnell, 52 years of age, of Flagstaff Arizona was pronounced deceased on scene. Investigators learned that Ms. Gunnell was crossing Rt. 66 near North Highway 89 but was not using the pedestrian crossing tunnel under the roadway. The driver of the vehicle was making a right hand turn onto Old Rt. 66 and did not see the pedestrian due to the glare of the sun. At this time this investigation is ongoing and it is unknown if any other factors contributed to this collision.

More details may be released as this investigation progresses.

The Flagstaff Police Department is currently investigating a fatal collision at Old East Route 66 and North Highway 89 involving a vehicle and a pedestrian. While the collision is being investigated one lane of Route 66 will be closed just past the intersection of North Highway 89 for approximately two hours. The Flagstaff Police Department is requesting that the public find an alternate route. All other roadways are open including North Highway 89. The female victim has not been identified at this time and her next of kin has not been notified.
