3 Family Members Displace by Structure Fire in Doney Park

On January 14, 2016 at approximately 4:00 pm, the Summit Fire and Medical Department responded to a report of a structure fire near the intersection of Leupp road and Edson road. Neighbors had called in to report that the rear porch of the structure was on fire. Summit Fire and Medical responded with 3 engines, 1 water tender and 1 battalion chief. Flagstaff Fire responded with 2 engines, 1 water tender and 1 battalion chief. Guardian Medical responded with one ambulance to the scene. Upon arrival Summit Fire found heavy smoke and flames coming from the back patio. Crews did an initial exterior fire attack and were able to knock down the fire from the exterior. Crews then went interior and found no residents home at the time. Crews did find 3 deceased family pets along with 1 female dog and her 5 puppies that had survived. Crews rescued the dogs and released them to Guardian Medial personnel who did life saving measures on them. The dogs survived and are currently under the care of the Coconino Humane Society. The American Red Cross was dispatched to the scene to assist the 3 displaced family members who were not home at the time of the incident. The family is currently staying with family friends. The extent of damage to the home is unknown at this time. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Donations can be made to the American Red Cross. The Summit Fire and Medical Department would like to remind residents that during these cold winter months to be careful with alternative heating appliances.
