Naked Man Fights With Flagstaff Police

On 7-30-16, at approximately 6:16 PM, Officer Beckwith with the Flagstaff Police Department responded to a report of a nude Caucasian male suspect behaving suspiciously at the 2800 Block of S. Highland Mesa Rd. Upon arrival Officer Beckwith was directed to a wooded area by the reporting party. He could hear the suspect yelling. Office Beckwith called for more assistance. This incident was captured on Officer Beckwith’s department issued body camera.

As Officer Beckwith approached the suspect he saw the man was nude and yelling. He called out to the man and the man identified him as a police officer as soon as he was seen. The suspect then demanded that Officer Beckwith take his clothes off. Officer Beckwith refused and asked the man to remain calm and come to speak to him. The man was non-compliant with the request and demanded that Officer Beckwith get on the ground. The suspect continued to behave aggressively and stood in a fighting stance as Officer Beckwith approached the area. Officer Beckwith instructed the man to put his hands up and turn around but the suspect refused and a started walking toward Officer Beckwith. Officer Beckwith pointed his Taser at the suspect and told him to stop but the suspect continued to advance on Officer Beckwith. Officer Beckwith discharged his Taser but it did not have an effect on the suspect. The suspect then assaulted Officer Beckwith and they fell to the ground rolling down a hill over rocks and dirt. The man stood up but Officer Beckwith was injured in the assault and was unable to stand.

An off duty NAU Police Officer, an off duty DPS Officer and another concerned citizen witnessed the incident and went to assist by tackling the suspect. Other Officers arrived on scene and restrained the suspect who continued to resist violently. The suspect was transported to Flagstaff Medical Center by ambulance and eventually moved to the Intensive Care Unit. It appeared as if the suspect may be under the influence of bath salts or some other type of mind altering substance.

Officer Beckwith was also transported to Flagstaff Medical Center where he was treated for severe lacerations and bruising he received during the altercation.

The suspect was identified as Stanley Barnes, 25 years of age, of Scottsdale, Arizona. Officer later learned that Mr. Barnes may have a history of mental illness.
