UPDATE: Names released in Friday’s fatal shooting

Flagstaff police have released the names of the deceased suspect, and the officers involved in Friday night’s shooting. Officers had responded to the 700-block of West Coconino Avenue after reports of a white male with a firearm.

According to police, Officers Daniel Beckwith and Travis Rowden had been giving commands to the suspect, Mr. John Hamilton, to drop his weapon and not wave it around or point it at anyone.  According to police, Mr. Hamilton failed to comply with Officers Beckwith and Rowden. The officers both discharged their weapons and Mr. Hamilton fell to the ground.

Medical aid was rendered, however Mr. Hamilton was pronounced deceased on the scene.

John Hamilton was a 78 year-old Flagstaff resident.

The incident was captured on audio and video, however Flagstaff Police are not releasing the video at this time.

Officers Beckwith and Rowden have been placed on paid administrative leave pending the results of the investigation.

According to Flagstaff police, this incident is being investigated by Northern Arizona Officer Involved Shoot Team.

OFFICIAL POLICE STATEMENT: FLAGSTAFF, AZ (February 9, 2018): The Flagstaff Police Department shot and killed a white male after the suspect pointed a firearm at a victim and officers at the 700 block of West Coconino Ave.

On February 9, 2018 at 8:52 PM a victim contacted the police department and informed them she had been confronted by a white male with a firearm at the 700 block of West Coconino Ave. Officers immediately responded and located a suspect matching the description the victim had provided. Police officers repeatedly demanded the man drop the firearm and not to wave it around or point it at anyone. After several minutes of the officers giving commands and the suspect failing to comply the officers discharged their weapons and the suspect fell. After rendering medical-aid the suspect was pronounced deceased on scene.

No officers or other bystanders were injured in this incident.

This incident is actively being investigated by the Northern Arizona Officer Involved Shoot Team, more information will be provided as it becomes available.

UPDATE 11 P.M. : The suspect is no longer a threat and is in police custody. Due to the nature of his injuries, we will withhold his condition until official details are given to us from the police department.

UPDATE 10:45 P.M. :  Just before 9 pm Friday evening, Flagstaff police received a 911 call from a frantic female stating her neighbor (who she’d been having an ongoing dispute with) was outside her apartment door threatening her with a gun. The woman locked herself in a bedroom while the neighbor, described as a white male in his seventies with a beard was  ringing the doorbell. When officers arrived, they confronted the suspect and observed him holding a firearm. They repeatedly told him to drop the weapon, but he instead waved the gun around and pointed it at Officers. The moment the weapon was pointed at Officers, the Officers shot the suspect. The incident took place in the middle of an apartment complex in the 700 block of Coconino Avenue. The is an active crime scene and details are still forthcoming. We will update you if and when we get them. Police scanner recording to follow.
