FINAL UPDATE POLICE: subject with a gun near NAU

UPDATE 3:50pm- On Tuesday August 8 th , at 1:46 p.m., the Flagstaff Police Department received a couple of calls reporting a male with a gun who may have made threats to shoot people. It was relayed to dispatch that two subjects had been kicked off the bus for drinking and were found to be intoxicated. At some point a gun fell out of the waistband of one of the subjects. The subjects were last seen in the area of the bus stop at Malpais Lane and Milton road. Officers began to saturate the area and contacted two subjects who fit the descriptions of the males who were removed from the bus. Once officers had the two suspects contained they began giving them verbal commands to get down on the ground and show their hands. One of the two subjects refused and began to walk towards the officers. Multiple officers continued to give him verbal commands. The subject refused to comply, and was advancing on the officers. An officer advised the male he was going to be tased multiple times and the male took his shirt off. The suspect was tased, falling to the ground, where officers were able to take him into custody. A pellet gun was located in the back pack of the male who was tased. The pellet gun was later placed into evidence. The suspect was taken for medical treatment where he stated that has trying to get the police to shoot him. Once he was cleared the suspect was booked into jail for refusal to obey an officer and discharging a weapon in the city limits. The suspect was identified as Leander Yazzie 30 years of age. The suspect who did comply with police commands indicated that Yazzie had fired the pellet gun into the ground prior to police arrival.


UPDATE 2:51pm – Police have arrested the male. Per scanner traffic, the call originated off of Milton and Malapis Ln. Callers reported a man who had been kicked off the bus, possibly intoxicated. There were reports that the man had stated he would shoot people. There were no injuries.


Police are investigating reports of a man with a gun in the area of the Drury Inn. He is reportedly a Native male, wearing a grey shirt and blue jeans. Avoid the area.
