Prescribed burns planned for next week in the Flagstaff area

September 17th, 2016 at 9:23 AM

Flagstaff, AZ September 16, 2016, For Immediate ReleaseFlagstaff Fire Department fire managers are planning three prescribed burns in the next week. Fire will be re-introduced into three project areas that have been previously thinned as part of forest restoration initiatives within the city. The intent of the burns are to decrease hazardous fuel accumulation and to increase forest health and public safety measures.

Airport Project: Planned ignitions will begin Monday, September 19th if weather conditions allow. The planning area is a 33 acre burn unit east of the airport runway. Predicted winds and ventilation should allow for minimal impacts to air traffic. Smoke may be visible along the Lake Mary Road corridor and to residents northeast of the airport. Smoke may settle overnight into drainages adjacent the burn area.

Naval Observatory: Ignitions are planned for the window of September 23-25 should conditions allow. The planning area is also a 33 acre block immediately adjacent the Naval Observatory just south of the I-40 corridor. Smoke will impact motorists traveling along I-40 and residents in Saskan Ranch and along West Route 66.

Rogers Lake Natural Area: Ignitions are planned for the window of September 24-26th as conditions allow. The 80 acre unit is located within the Rogers Lake Natural Area. Smoke impacts may be seen by visitors to the area.

All ignitions are planned for no longer than one operational day each. Crews will monitor the areas post ignition in the following weeks to assure adequate containment and minimal impacts to residents and visitors. Managers are working closely with partners and Arizona Department of Environmental Quality to assure appropriate smoke management measures are in place to reduce smoke impacts to the surrounding community.
