Just after 1600 yesterday, the FFD responded 1 engine, 1 Quint, and 1 Battalion Chief to the report of a vehicle rollover at mile marker 190 on westbound I-40. Initial radio reports stated there were four victims, two of whom were trapped. DPS troopers on the scene followed up and stated three of the victims had self-extricated, but one victim was severely pinned in the vehicle. Engine 1 from FFD arrived on the scene with GMT and set up for extrication. Engine 811 from Ponderosa Fire Department and Engine 911 from Camp Navajo Fire Department arrived on the scene and assisted with vehicle stabilization and extrication. Utilizing hydraulic-powered extrication tools, firefighters were able to lift the floor of the vehicle up and disentangle the victim and remove her from the wreckage. Patient care was transferred to GMT and two patients were transported to FMC in stable condition.
Vehicle extrication is lower-frequency, higher-risk call that firefighters train diligently on for incidents just like this when time is precious and critical. Stay safe.
