Update to Investigation of Flagstaff Police Officer (Press conference key points)

The Flagstaff Police Department would like to again thank our community for their patience as we continue the very detailed and thorough administrative investigation into the incident involving Officer Bonar’s use of force when attempting to detain Marissa Morris. As this investigation comes to a close, we must continue to follow state law and city policies to ensure due process. We remain committed to informing the public of the outcome as soon as we are able.

We have also remained in close communication with the Northern AZ University Police Department throughout this process as they complete the criminal investigation into Officer Bonar’s actions.

As a reminder we continue to utilize the website at http://www.fpdtransparency.com to post additional reports, media releases and additional information. This website is free to the public and provides the latest information available on the investigation. Thank You.

UPDATE 11/17/2016: Key points from today’s press conference by Flagstaff Police Chief Kevin Treadway:

  • NAU Police Department will be conducting the investigation into the officers actions.
  • Officer Bonar has been an Officer with the Flagstaff Police Dept for 3 years.
  • He has no previous disciplinary actions noted in his personnel file.
  • An off-duty police employee was approached by a citizen regarding the video. At that time the employee brought this to the attention of her supervisors. 
  • The female who was punched has been identified as Marissa Morris
  • Officer Bonar believed Marissa had outstanding warrants for a dui related failure to appear, and for resisting arrest.
  • According to the police Chief, SHE HAD NO OUTSTANDING WARRANTS, and the ones above had already been taken care of previously.
  • Officers were originally called to the residence to serve an eviction notice.
  • Flagstaff police department will setting up a dedicated website for this investigation. Details on this site will be released in the coming days. 

Flagstaff Police Department MEDIA RELEASE

On 11-16-16, at approximately 7:30 PM, the Flagstaff Police Department became aware of a Facebook video post of a Flagstaff Police Officer involved in the arrest of an adult female earlier this afternoon. During the arrest the female, who appears somewhat uncooperative was struck in the face by the officer. Our agency is very concerned by what is depicted in this video. We are immediately initiating an internal investigation into this incident.

The officer has been identified as Officer Jeff Bonar. He has been placed on administrative leave. An internal affairs investigation is being initiated.

Further details will be released as the investigation progresses.
