Wildland Fire on Fanning DR (Delayed)

March 27th, 2016 at 9:50 PM

Yesterday, the Flagstaff Fire Department was sent to the area of Fanning Dr. and St. Moritz for the report of smoke in the area. The initial dispatch was for one Wildland unit to respond to the area to investigate. High winds were present in town yesterday which always puts firefighters on high alert. Luckily the Captain from Quint 2 (ladder truck) was clearing from a medical call in the area. He had seen the smoke and decided to investigate even though his unit was not initially dispatched. Once on scene, the Captain from Quint 2 found heavy smoke and fire coming from behind a home in the area. The fire was also threatening multiple homes.

At this point, additional fire units were requested to respond to the scene. Crew members from quint 2 were able to extended a hand line off of their apparatus and make an aggressive attack on the fire that was threatening the homes. This was determined to be a wildfire in the wooded area directly behind the homes and was within a few feet of catching these structures on fire. Firefighters from 3 different crews were able to take control of the fire within 10 minutes. The fire progression was stopped when crew members sprayed a wet line around the area burning and cleared all flammable fuels away from the fire. Firefighters spent the next hour making sure the fire was fully extinguished. The cause of the fire is undetermined at this point. No property was damaged and no firefighter injuries were reported during this incident. FFD would like to thank our mutual aid partners from Summit Fire and Highlands fire for helping cover the city during this time.

The Flagstaff Fire Department would like to remind its community to make sure to fully extinguish all campfires by using water and turning the soil until you feel that the fire is cold and out.12901202_1357428424284273_4020998455312637148_o
