Flagstaff, AZ – The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office is undergoing significant changes to its leadership team with the retirement of Sheriff Jim Driscoll in January. Sheriff-Elect Bret Axlund has announced the appointment of one new member and the promotion of another within the Command Staff, effective January 6, 2025.

Chief Deputy Gerrit Boeck

Gerrit Boeck, who has served as the Law Enforcement Operations Commander for the past three years, will step into the role of Chief Deputy. Meanwhile, James Steng, currently a Lieutenant in the Criminal Investigations Division, will take over as the new Law Enforcement Operations Commander.

These changes come as Sheriff-Elect Axlund prepares to lead the department. The leadership team will include Support Services Commander Cathy Allen and Detention Commander Matthew Figueroa, who will continue in their respective roles, alongside Boeck and Steng.

The Sheriff’s Office emphasized its commitment to maintaining the high standard of service that Coconino County residents expect. Sheriff-Elect Axlund and the Command Staff are eager to embark on this new chapter and encourage the community to welcome Chief Deputy Boeck and Commander Steng.
