FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The City of Flagstaff is inviting residents to help shape a new three-dimensional landmark art feature planned for the East Cedar Avenue and North West Street promontory, part of the Spruce Wash Wedge Detention Project.

“If you live on the Eastside or have a strong connection to this area, the artist team wants to hear from you,” said Jana Weldon, program manager for Beautification, Arts & Sciences. “This is your chance to share what makes this part of Flagstaff special.”

An online survey, open through Sept. 9, asks participants a series of questions designed to capture personal experiences, cultural insights and community vision. The responses will guide artists in creating a one-of-a-kind public art installation that reflects the spirit of Flagstaff’s Eastside.

“Community input is an important part of the public art process,” Weldon said. “From selecting the artist team to developing concepts and final designs, community voices guide every stage. This ensures the artwork is impactful, enduring, and truly made by the community for the community.”

The artist team, Haddad|Drugan, was selected last spring by a panel of city staff, Eastside residents, and representatives from the Beautification & Public Art Commission. Their past work in Flagstaff includes “Lion Eyes (Through the Forest)” and “Southside Grove” at the Downtown Connection Center.

Survey responses will be reviewed for recurring themes, stories, and cultural touchstones. The artists will use this feedback, along with local research and creative inspiration, to design preliminary concepts. A second round of community input will take place in 2026 before final designs are approved.

The artwork will complement flood mitigation improvements at the Spruce Wash Watershed, including a reconfigured promontory, a new retaining wall and an expanded sidewalk landing.

Residents can participate in the survey at connect.flagstaffaz.gov/sprucewashwedge.
