FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — Flagstaff Pulliam Airport has been selected to receive an $800,000 federal grant aimed at expanding air service and potentially bringing new nonstop flights to Denver or Salt Lake City.
Flagstaff is one of 14 airports nationwide selected for funding through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Small Community Air Service Development Program.
According to the City of Flagstaff, the funding will be used to provide financial incentives to an airline willing to establish new nonstop service from Flagstaff Pulliam Airport to either Denver or Salt Lake City.
The Small Community Air Service Development Program is intended to help smaller communities address challenges involving limited air service and higher airfares.
Airport Communications Manager Claire Harper said the grant could help improve connectivity across northern Arizona and provide travelers with additional flight options.
“FLG is excited to be a recipient of the SCASDP grant and eager to provide more connectivity to the northern Arizona region,” Harper said. “More flight options create easier opportunities for travelers and stimulate economic growth throughout our community.”
Airport Director Brian Gall called the award a major step toward improving regional access for residents, businesses and visitors.
The competition for the funding was significant. According to the city, 56 communities applied this year, requesting nearly $49 million in federal assistance, while up to approximately $14 million was available through the program.
Flagstaff’s overall project budget is $1,348,500. That includes the $800,000 federal grant along with approximately $548,500 in community cash funding and in-kind contributions.
The airport also received letters of support from two airlines, two airports and more than 20 local community partners and elected officials.
Flagstaff Pulliam Airport said the funding provides a foundation for pursuing additional commercial air service, although an airline and final route have not yet been announced.
