Original Report
COCONINO COUNTY, Ariz. — The Coconino County Sheriff's Office (CCSO) is warning residents of possible flooding along the San Francisco Wash near Townsend-Winona and Cosnino.
Flagscanner has been told that a dam located on or near private property in the area is causing concern among emergency crews, who fear the structure may be at risk of failing. We have not independently confirmed the condition of the dam or whether a failure is imminent.
The flooding alert includes communities between Blue Field Road and Leupp Road, north of Townsend-Winona Road.
According to CCSO, floodwaters are expected to impact properties in the area and overtop Leupp Road and Wilkes Road, potentially creating dangerous conditions for motorists and nearby residents.
Residents in the affected areas are urged to take precautions, including:
Seek higher ground if threatened by rising floodwaters.
Avoid washes, drainages, and low-lying areas.
Avoid traveling on roads threatened by flooding.
DO NOT attempt to drive through floodwaters.
Follow instructions from responding emergency personnel.
Residents in and around Townsend-Winona and Cosnino should remain alert to rapidly changing conditions and additional emergency notifications.
This is a developing situation. Flagscanner will provide updates as additional information becomes available.
