Black bear spotted along I40 in Flagstaff

On 5/26/23 at approximately 0520 hours, the Flagstaff Police Department responded to I40 and the Fourth St bridge for a report of a bear attempting to cross the freeway. When officers arrived on scene they found a black bear who was stuck in the median of west and east bound I40. Officers kept visual of the bear and attempted traffic control measures to ensure the safety of the passing motorist and the bear while waiting from resources from the Coconino County Animal Control division and the AZ Game and Fish Department to arrive. With the help of these resources and some creative wrangling the bear was able to successfully cross the I40 and return to the wild near Harold Ranch Rd.
