FLAGSTAFF, Ariz – The City of Flagstaff invites artists to submit Statements of Qualifications (SOQs) to work within a design team to create a landmark three-dimensional artwork within a roundabout at the intersection of North Switzer Canyon Drive and North Turquoise Drive. The deadline to apply is July 1, 2025, at 3 p.m.

The Switzer Canyon Roundabout 3D Artwork will be part of the single-lane roundabout completed by the City of Flagstaff in 2019. The artwork will serve as a distinctive icon that enriches the cultural and aesthetic landscape of the neighborhood and Flagstaff. The site-specific public art installation will exist within a reconfiguration of the hardscape at the center of the roundabout that maintains traffic safety signage and sightlines.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to create a three-dimensional artwork for our community—one that enhances infrastructure and underscores the City’s commitment to artistic expression in our public spaces,” said Jana Weldon, Beautification, Arts & Sciences Program Manager. “The selected artist will join a design team with a supporting landscape architect to thoughtfully integrate artwork into the Switzer Canyon Roundabout, adding visual interest to the urban environment.”

Interested artists must submit an SOQ in response to the solicitation in the City’s Planet Bids portal demonstrating their applicable competence, qualifications, and relevant experience with public art. The selected artist will receive a design services contract. Once the City approves the design and all necessary documents are completed, a second contract will be issued for fabrication and installation.

The artist will develop a site-specific icon through community engagement, location research and artistic inspiration, and in collaboration with a City-selected landscape architect. The final artwork must be fabricated and installed within budget and meet key durability and safety standards, including resistance to environmental elements, minimal maintenance requirements and graffiti deterrence. Artists must register as a vendor on Planet Bids before submitting an SOQ.
