FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — Coconino County court leaders, community members and justice-system partners gathered Thursday for a strategic planning forum focused on what local court services should look like over the next two decades.
The Sept. 17 “Justice 2045” forum was held at the High Country Conference Center in Flagstaff and drew 115 participants, including judges, residents, attorneys, law enforcement representatives, court employees, elected officials, educators, social service organizations and City and County staff.
The forum was supported by funding from the State Justice Institute and facilitated by Dr. Nancy Wonders and Dr. Fred Solop.
Arizona Supreme Court Chief Justice Ann Timmer served as the keynote speaker.
Participants focused discussions on five key areas: access, services and programs; fair and timely resolution and efficient operations; public trust and confidence in the courts; maintaining a professional and engaged workforce; and court infrastructure.
According to Coconino County, input gathered during the forum will be used by court leadership to develop formal strategies aimed at improving services for people who interact with the local court system.
Justice 2045 continues a series of long-range planning efforts previously held in 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015 and 2021.
County officials say previous forums helped lead to several programs and improvements, including expanded Law Day activities, the Legal Futures program connecting high school students with justice-system careers, speech-to-text transcript technology to improve accessibility and the Family Law Assistance Program for people representing themselves in court.
“Justice 2045 is about more than writing a strategic plan, it is about imagining the kind of justice system our community will need twenty years from now and beginning the work today to build it,” Coconino County Presiding Judge Ted Reed said.
Reed said the effort is designed to bring courts, justice partners, community organizations and residents together to help create a system that is more accessible, responsive, innovative and effective for future generations.
