Coconino County officials are preparing to adopt updated building codes aimed at improving safety, energy efficiency and wildfire resistance across the region.

According to the Coconino County Community Development Department, the county updates its building codes every six years in partnership with the Building Safety Advisory Board. The process is designed to address emerging safety risks, incorporate new construction materials and technology, and maintain a strong Insurance Services Office rating.

For the 2024 International Code Council building code cycle, county staff worked with members of the local building and development community to identify amendments focused on increasing structural wildfire resistance and improving energy conservation measures.

Officials say the selective local amendments are intended to help maintain modern building standards while also supporting housing affordability and implementing practical wildfire-hardening measures tailored to local conditions.

A public hearing on the proposed code updates will be held Tuesday, June 2 at 4 p.m. during the Coconino County Board of Supervisors meeting at 219 E. Cherry Ave. in Flagstaff. The Board is expected to hear public comments, consider the proposed updates and potentially take action.
