FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — The Flagstaff City Council voted Tuesday night to cancel the City’s contract with Flock Safety, the company that provides automated license plate recognition (ALPR) technology, during its Dec. 16 Council Meeting.

According to the City, the Flagstaff Police Department has immediately deactivated the Flock Safety system following the Council’s decision. The department will now work with Flock Safety to remove the cameras that were installed under the City of Flagstaff’s contract.

Flock Safety’s ALPR cameras had been used to capture vehicle license plate data to assist law enforcement with investigations, including locating stolen vehicles and identifying vehicles connected to criminal activity. The technology has also been the subject of ongoing public discussion and concern related to data privacy, oversight, and how collected information is stored and used.

ALPR Cameras will remain in service on the Northern Arizona University Campus and along the area interstates.

Flagscanner will continue to monitor developments related to this decision and provide updates as more information becomes available.
