A peaceful evening at Lake Mary took a startling turn Thursday when the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office was called to the area for a suspicious object spotted along the shoreline. The call came in around 7:30 PM after someone reported what appeared to be a live, undetonated grenade partially buried in the mud.

Deputies arrived quickly and confirmed the object was indeed what appeared to be a grenade, prompting an immediate call for the Flagstaff Police Department’s bomb squad. The area was secured while bomb technicians assessed the situation.

According to the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office, the object was safely detonated on-site a short time later, and the scene was declared secure. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Officials say it’s still unclear how the grenade ended up at the lake. However, based on its condition and location, authorities believe it had been underwater for some time and was recently revealed as water levels at Lake Mary have continued to drop.

The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is urged to contact the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office.
