FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — Drivers along Fort Valley Road should prepare for possible delays beginning Monday, August 17, as construction gets underway on several pedestrian safety improvements near Mountain Line bus stops.
The City of Flagstaff, in partnership with Mountain Line and contractor Kinney Construction Services, will begin installing pedestrian crossings at multiple locations along the Fort Valley Road corridor.
Construction in 2026 will include crossings at:
- Fort Valley Road and Meade Lane
- Fort Valley Road and Anderson Road/Whiting Road
A third crossing planned at Fort Valley Road and Forest Avenue will be constructed at a later date.
Work may take place Monday through Friday between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.
According to the City, at least one lane of traffic in each direction will remain open throughout construction, and access to nearby businesses, schools and residential communities will be maintained.
Motorists should expect possible travel delays, construction equipment in the roadway and temporary traffic control devices throughout the work zone. Drivers are encouraged to slow down, follow posted signage and consider alternate routes when possible.
Periodic sidewalk and pedestrian closures may also be necessary. Detours for pedestrians will be provided along the Karen Cooper FUTS.
The improvements are part of Flagstaff’s First Mile, Last Mile Initiative, which is designed to improve pedestrian access and safety near Mountain Line bus stops.
City officials say there is currently no safe way for pedestrians to cross at the affected intersections to reach nearby transit stops.
The new crossings will include pedestrian refuge medians, allowing people to cross one lane of traffic at a time rather than crossing the entire roadway at once.
The future crossing at Fort Valley Road and Forest Avenue is also planned to include flashing pedestrian warning lights similar to those already used at several locations throughout Flagstaff.
