FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — In their first official action at their first meeting of 2024, the Coconino County Board of Supervisors (Board) appointed Adam Hess of Bellemont to represent District 3 through the rest of 2024. Hess, a 27-year-veteran of the United States Army and long-time resident of Coconino County, was appointed by the Board after an extensive recruitment process that began with the announcement of Supervisor Matt Ryan’s retirement in October 2023.

“This is something I’ve been looking forward to for quite a while and I want to thank everyone for their support,” Supervisor Hess commented. “This is my home, and my focus as District 3 Supervisor will be to meet the people I represent and find out how best I can help them and speak for them on the Board.”

Hess grew up in Flagstaff after his family relocated in 1976 and is a graduate of Sinagua High School and Northern Arizona University. He also has a Master of Science in Geological Engineering from Missouri University of Science and Technology. Additionally, he has graduated from the Engineer Officer Basic Course and Engineer Captain Career Course at the United States Army Engineer School in Fort Leonard Wood, MO. He retired from active duty from the Active Guard Reserve Program with the rank of Major in 2023.

“Through the recruitment process I’ve watched Supervisor Hess grow into the role he’s about to take on,” added Jeronimo Vasquez, Chair of the Board and Supervisor for District 2. “I know he has the best interests of Coconino County at heart and I look forward to working with him this year.”

Supervisor Hess will fill the remainder of Matt Ryan’s term, lasting through December 31, 2024. All Supervisor seats will come up for reelection this year, and Hess has indicated his intention to run for election to a full 4-year term.

As with all members of the Board, Supervisor Hess will maintain an office at the Coconino County Administrative Center, 219 E. Cherry Ave in Flagstaff. County residents wishing to get in touch with him may do so via email at ahess@coconino.az.gov or by calling (928) 679-7163.
