PRESS RELEASE: County Public Works adds section of Woody Mountain Road to Schedule A road maintenance inventory

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. —A 6.4-mile section of Woody Mountain Road, also known as Forest Service Road 231, has been added to the roster of U.S. Forest Service (USFS) roads maintained by Coconino County Public Works.

The section of Woody Mountain Road was added to the County’s list of Schedule “A” roads at the Board of Supervisors meeting on September 11 as part of the renewal of the Cooperative Forest Road Agreement between the Forest Service and Public Works.

Under the new agreement Public Works assumes maintenance responsibilities for road surface grading on Woody Mountain Road from the Flagstaff City Limits at Purple Sage Trail to Forest Road 231D, which is located just past the entrance to the County-owned Frontiere Property at Rogers Lake.

“Adding this section of Woody Mountain Road to our road maintenance inventory aligns with the County’s plans for this area to the benefit of residents and visitors alike,” said Christopher Tressler, Director of Public Works. “Providing regular maintenance for this well-used road greatly enhances current access to Coconino National Forest lands and to such popular destinations as the Arboretum at Flagstaff and the Rogers Lake County Natural Area. At the same time, it allows us to prepare for future investments in the area.”

Public Works began grading its section of Woody Mountain Road in mid-September. The team is currently developing a plan for future road surfacing operations, which are slated to get underway next spring.

Renewed every five years, the Cooperative Forest Road Agreement/Schedule “A” is a partnership between the USFS and Public Works to promote maintenance of certain forest roads for public use benefit, primarily for accessing USFS public lands. Public Works maintains over 120 miles of Schedule A roads under the new Cooperative Forest Road Agreement.
