PRESS RELEASE | Lake Mary Road Pavement Preservation Work Starts Monday, June 3

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — Coconino County’s contractor is preparing to conduct pavement preservation operations starting next Monday, June 3 along the six-mile stretch of Lake Mary Road between the Flagstaff city limits and Milepost 332.

C & E Paving & Grading is scheduled to work during daylight hours. Traffic control will be in place and pilot cars will be used to guide vehicles through the work zone. The project is scheduled to be completed by next Friday, June 7; however, this schedule is subject to change due to weather or other unforeseen factors.

Drivers should expect delays, plan travel accordingly, and are encouraged to use extra caution and obey posted speed limits throughout the work zone. Recreationists should be aware that the road shoulders in the project sections will be closed during pavement preservation operations.

The project includes chip sealing and fog sealing the travel lanes and roadway shoulders on Lake Mary Road. The road and shoulders will be swept after work is completed; however, motorists and recreationists should be aware of loose chips remaining in the travel lanes and on the shoulders.

Chip sealing is a pavement preservation treatment that involves applying an asphalt emulsion to a paved road surface and then covering it with small, crushed stone chips. Fog sealing adds a thin, sprayed-on asphalt emulsion to a newly chip-sealed surface, which helps to secure the chips and better seal the road against moisture.

Pavement preservation projects such as chip sealing and fog sealing are preventative maintenance measures for asphalt that protect and extend the service life of paved County roads. This season the County conducted pavement preservation operations along approximately 15 miles of County-maintained roadway. Lake Mary Road is the County’s final pavement preservation project of 2024.
