Traffic stop near Walnut Canyon leads to 2.4 pounds of suspected fentanyl seized; driver arrested

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — A traffic stop on Interstate 40 near the Walnut Canyon Exit resulted in the seizure of 2.4 pounds of suspected powder fentanyl and the arrest of the driver, according to the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO).

CCSO said its K9 Unit conducted the stop at approximately 1:29 p.m. on March 2, 2026, after a vehicle was observed committing a traffic violation on I-40 near the Walnut Canyon Exit. During the stop, CCSO reported the deputy received consent to search the vehicle, and the search allegedly revealed the suspected fentanyl.

Investigators estimate the suspected fentanyl had a street value of $30,720.

CCSO identified the driver as Griselda Vences, 35, who was arrested and booked into the Coconino County Detention Facility. CCSO said Vences was booked on the following charges:

  • Transportation of Narcotic Drugs for Sale
  • Possession of Drug Paraphernalia
  • Introducing Contraband into a Correctional Facility

CCSO stated the case remains under investigation and no additional details were released at this time.
