UPDATE: Flagstaff-area wildfires: Crews work to suppress Flat Fire. Bear Fire contained #FlatFire #BearFire



FLAGSTAFF, Ariz., July 11, 2023 — Crews are currently working to suppress both the Bear Fire and the Flat Fire, two human-caused wildfires located near the City of Flagstaff.

The Bear Fire located 6 miles southeast of Flagstaff (GPS: 35°08’19.2″N 111°34’07.2″W) near Marshall Lake, is fully contained at 2.8 acres.

One Hotshot crew and two engines are assigned to the fire. Crews spent Monday afternoon constructing line around the fire and plan to spend Tuesday securing those containment lines and mopping up.

There are no road, trail or area closures at this time. Slight smoke may still remain visible in the fire area. The Bear Fire was first reported via a lookout tower at 11:03 a.m. Monday and the cause is under investigation.

The Flat Fire, located north of the San Francisco Peaks and about 4.5 miles west of Highway 89 (GPS: 35°28’04.0″N 111°39’16.3″W) is estimated to be 5% contained at roughly 150 acres.

Current resources assigned to the fire include two Hotshot crews, one hand crew, one dozer, one water tender and four engines.

The fire has a low rate of spread and is currently moving in a north/northeast direction through grass and pinyon-juniper.

Crews spent Monday evening constructing containment lines on the east and west flanks of the fire. Crews plan to take a direct suppression approach toward the head of the fire.

The fire was reported at about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday and the cause is under investigation.
