FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — Coconino County officials announced that Stage 1 fire restrictions will be expanded beginning Thursday, June 11, at 8 a.m., in coordination with the Kaibab National Forest.

The expanded restrictions will apply to all unincorporated areas within the boundaries of the Kaibab National Forest. All other areas of Coconino County remain under existing Stage 1 fire restrictions.

Under Stage 1 restrictions, the igniting, building, maintaining, attending, or using of fires fueled by combustible materials such as wood, charcoal, briquettes, or coal is prohibited except within a developed site. Smoking is also prohibited except within an enclosed vehicle or a developed site.

The use of tracer rounds, incendiary ammunition, and explosive targets is strictly prohibited during Stage 1 restrictions.

According to Coconino County’s Wildfire Defense Ordinance, a developed site is defined as an area that is barren or cleared of all overhead and surrounding vegetation and combustible materials within a 15-foot radius of the fire device.

County officials are urging residents and visitors to use extra caution while recreating on public lands as hot, dry conditions continue across northern Arizona.

Violations of fire restrictions may result in fines and possible jail time.

Additional information about Coconino County’s Stage 1, Stage 2, and Stage 3 fire restrictions is available on the County’s fire restrictions webpage.
