Breaking: Home Near Doney Park Damaged in Overnight Fire

At 1:22 AM, Summit Fire Department and Flagstaff Fire Department were dispatched to a working house fire in the 7400 block of Cody Rd near Doney Park. The homeowner advised 911 dispatchers that his roof was on fire. He believed the fire started in the fireplace and that everyone was evacuated, but several animals needed to be moved to safety. Less than 5 minutes later, the first Summit engine co arrived. They were met with a working fire that had already spread to multiple areas of the single-level modular-style home. A first alarm upgrade assignment was then ordered by the Fire Chief. Several engines from the City of Flagstaff were then called to assist. Crews immediately went into an offensive strategy and made entry into the home, where they were met with heavy flames and smoke. At 1:48 AM, a partial collapse of the roof occurred. At 1:58 AM, Command reported that the bulk of the fire had been knocked down. A full fire knockdown was reported at 2:24 AM. It was also noted that crews kept the fire from spreading to the main part of the house and that it was contained to a rear addition. An outstanding coordinated effort was implemented by the Fire department, which saved the main portion of the home, neighboring homes, and surrounding land. The Red Cross was called to the scene to assist the family. No injuries were reported. The status of the animals is unknown, but Summit Fire is expected to send a press release later in the day.
