FREE Press Release – City announces completion of Landfill Road Reconstruction Project

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz – The City of Flagstaff is proud to announce the completion of the Landfill Road Reconstruction Project, which re-paved and improved the road from US Hwy 89 to the Cinder Lake Landfill northeast of Flagstaff. The completed project provides reliable and easy access to the Landfill for customers, as well as increased stormwater capacity along the road, which was necessary due to wildfires and post-wildfire flooding in the area.

The City of Flagstaff’s Solid Waste Section began the project in March 2024 and completed work in September. Project partners included Coconino County, the United States Forest Service, the design engineering firm Ardurra, and the contractor Rummel Construction. The final cost of the project was approximately $5M. Coconino County contributed $2.4M in funding for the project and the remainder of the funding was provided by the City of Flagstaff Solid Waste Section.

Scott Overton, City of Flagstaff Public Works Director said “The Flagstaff City Council and the Coconino County Board of Supervisors knew that we needed safe, secure access to a landfill that serves customers throughout our region. Although we faced a tight schedule and other challenges, the project was delivered on budget and on time.”
