A “shelter-in-place” protocol for schools is a safety procedure implemented in response to a threat or hazard occurring nearby, but not necessarily inside the school building itself. It involves directing students and staff to stay inside the school building and take shelter in designated areas until the situation is deemed safe to resume normal activities or until further instructions are given. During a shelter-in-place, exterior doors and windows are typically locked or secured to prevent entry, and individuals are instructed to remain away from doors and windows to minimize exposure to potential dangers. This protocol aims to protect students and staff from external threats such as severe weather, nearby police activity, or other emergencies without the need for evacuation.
