FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — A high-speed pursuit late Saturday night along northbound Interstate 17 ended with an arrest and a multi-agency search after two passengers bailed from a fleeing vehicle and ran into nearby woods.

According to the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office, at approximately 8:45 p.m., a deputy attempted to stop a blue Volkswagen Jetta near milepost 328 at Newman Park, roughly 10 miles south of Flagstaff. The driver refused to stop and fled at a high rate of speed.

During the pursuit, two passengers jumped from the vehicle and ran on foot into the surrounding forested area while the driver continued northbound. About six miles later, another CCSO deputy successfully stopped the vehicle and took the driver into custody.

A coordinated search for the two passengers followed, involving U.S. Forest Service Law Enforcement, Flagstaff Police Department, and Arizona Department of Public Safety. Using foot imprints in the snow, officers tracked movement in the area and located several bundles of what were described as “blue pills.” A DPS Helicopter was also used in the search.

As of this writing, it is unknown whether the two passengers were located. Their identities and any potential charges have not yet been released.

Flagscanner has submitted an inquiry to CCSO requesting additional details.
