FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Northern Arizona University (NAU) Police confirmed there was no active threat to campus today after a report of a person with a gun at Cline Library was determined to be a hoax.

The report prompted an immediate emergency response on the Flagstaff mountain campus. NAU Police Department (NAUPD) quickly activated campus emergency notifications, evacuated the library, and—working with local law enforcement—conducted a thorough search of the building.

Authorities stressed that at no time was there an actual threat to the NAU community. An investigation into the false report is now underway with assistance from the FBI.

University officials said today’s incident underscores their focus on emergency preparedness and strong partnerships with local and federal agencies.

“We are grateful to our students, faculty, and staff for their cooperation,” NAU said in a statement, extending appreciation to responding agencies including the Flagstaff Police Department, Flagstaff Fire Department, Coconino County Sheriff’s Office, Guardian Medical Transport, Arizona Department of Public Safety, U.S. Marshals Service, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms for their rapid and coordinated response.

FROM NAU: There will continue to be a police presence at Cline Library. An update will be issued when the building is cleared to reopen for normal activities.

There is no active threat to the Flagstaff Mountain Campus. All other campus activities and operations are proceeding as normal.

At 9:21 AM, Flagstaff Police and NAU Police were called to the Cline Library on the Northern Arizona University Campus for a possible active shooter situation. Evacuations are in progress. NO VICTIMS HAVE BEEN REPORTED AT THIS TIME. The police are setting up a perimeter and clearing the building now. Due to the severity of this incident, updates will not be posted until the police have provided us with an update.
