FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — Looking for a way to get more involved in Coconino County? Consider applying to serve on the Commission on Trial Court Appointments (Commission) or to be part of the Nominating Committees. These bodies are the first steps in the merit selection process of appointing new superior court judges. In 2018, Coconino County voters approved a measure to change from a partisan election of superior court judges to a merit selection process.
Each County Supervisor has three seats from their district on the Commission. Two are recommended by their Nominating Committee and the third is recommended by the County Bar Association. Before becoming a member of the Commission, applicants are recommended by the Nominating Committee, appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the State Senate. To apply for the Commission, visit coconino.az.gov/3285/Commission-on-Trial-Court-Appointments.
The five, seven-member Nominating Committees solicit, review and recommend two nominees for the Commission per district. If you are interested in serving, contact the County Supervisor’s Office for the district where you reside.
Applicants for the Commission and Nominating Committees must meet the following qualifications:
- Five-year State residency
- One-year supervisor district residency
- Cannot be a judge, retired judge or lawyer practicing before the state Supreme Court
- Cannot hold governmental office, elected or appointed, for profit
