FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — Flagstaff Police have released additional details regarding a fatal vehicle-pedestrian collision Flagscanner reported on as the incident was unfolding Friday night.
According to the Flagstaff Police Department, officers were dispatched at approximately 7:49 p.m. on September 4 to the 1300 block of South Plaza Way for a reported collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian.
When officers arrived, they located 69-year-old Flagstaff resident Gary Zeman unresponsive at the scene. Officers immediately began life-saving measures, but Zeman ultimately succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police identified the driver as 23-year-old Matthew Goodman of Queen Creek. Goodman remained at the scene following the collision and cooperated with investigators.
Following the initial investigation, Goodman was arrested and booked into the Coconino County Detention Facility on charges of reckless driving and manslaughter.
The Flagstaff Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division and Collision Reconstruction Team responded to investigate and process the scene.
Police say the circumstances surrounding the collision remain under investigation. Speed and impairment are believed to have been contributing factors, according to the department.
Flagscanner initially reported on the collision Friday evening while emergency crews and law enforcement were actively working the scene.
