UPDATE: Suspect in Custody Following Hours-Long SWAT Standoff in Downtown Flagstaff
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — A suspect is in custody following an hours-long SWAT operation that unfolded overnight and into Friday morning in the 200 block of South Beaver Street, prompting a large law enforcement response and the closure of several downtown streets.
According to information obtained by FlagScanner, the incident began at approximately 1:41 a.m. when a Flagstaff police officer requested additional officers respond to a residence in the 200 block of South Beaver Street. The officer advised that a perimeter needed to be established around the home.
Officers secured the area while investigators worked to obtain a search warrant. The Flagstaff Police Department's SWAT Team was also requested to respond.
Authorities repeatedly attempted to contact the suspect and ordered them to exit the residence, but those efforts were unsuccessful.
By approximately 2:00 a.m., all traffic on Beaver Street had been shut down as the situation escalated. Detectives were called to the scene, and radio traffic indicated the investigation involved a weapons violation.
Investigators interviewed witnesses at the scene, and those individuals were later transported to the Flagstaff Police Department for additional interviews shortly after 2:00 a.m.
Police determined the suspect had barricaded themselves inside the residence and was believed to be armed with a handgun. As a precaution, officers expanded the perimeter and closed all intersections surrounding the immediate area while SWAT personnel prepared to resolve the situation.
Several hours later, officers made entry into the home after what is believed to have been the deployment of tear gas. The suspect was subsequently taken into custody without further incident.
The identity of the suspect, the specific charges they may face, and the circumstances leading to the weapons investigation have not yet been released by the Flagstaff Police Department.
FlagScanner has reached out to the Flagstaff Police Department for official details and will update this story as additional information becomes available.
