FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — The National Weather Service in Flagstaff has issued a Red Flag Warning for parts of northern Arizona on Saturday, along with a Fire Weather Watch for Sunday due to strong winds, low humidity, and the potential for rapid fire growth.

The Red Flag Warning is in effect from 10 a.m. MST to 8 p.m. MST Saturday for the Kaibab Plateau, Grand Canyon, and Coconino Plateau, including portions of the Kaibab National Forest.

Forecasters say southwest winds of 15 to 25 mph are expected, with gusts up to 40 mph. Relative humidity is expected to drop between 9 and 16 percent.

A Fire Weather Watch will then be in effect from Sunday morning through Sunday evening for a broader area, including the Yavapai County Mountains, Chuska Mountains and Defiance Plateau, Little Colorado River Valley, Mogollon Rim, Black Mesa area, Painted Desert, Kaibab Plateau, Grand Canyon, and Coconino Plateau.

Sunday conditions could include southwest winds of 15 to 25 mph, gusts up to 45 mph, and humidity between 9 and 16 percent.

The National Weather Service says any new or existing fires could spread rapidly and may exhibit extreme fire behavior. Officials also warn of an elevated potential for new fire starts.

Residents and visitors are urged to avoid outdoor activities that could spark a fire, including dragging chains, parking on dry grass, using equipment that creates sparks, or leaving campfires unattended.
