FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — Authorities have identified 51-year-old Terrell Storey as the suspect arrested following a deadly Wednesday evening incident in west Flagstaff that involved an officer-involved shooting and the crash of an Arizona Department of Public Safety helicopter that killed two officers.
According to the Flagstaff Police Department, the incident began Wednesday evening, Feb. 4, when officers responded to a disturbance in the 1700 block of West Shellie Drive. Police say the situation escalated into an active shooter incident, during which officers were involved in a shooting with Storey.
Storey was shot by officers during the encounter and suffered non-fatal gunshot wounds, police said. He was taken into custody and later booked into jail on multiple felony charges, including first-degree murder during the commission of a crime, aggravated assault on a first responder, first-degree residential burglary, and disorderly conduct involving fighting or disruptive behavior.
During the response, an AZDPS ranger helicopter was providing tactical air support when the aircraft crashed. Authorities confirmed that both the pilot and a DPS trooper/paramedic on board were killed. Pilot Robert Bruce Skankey and State Trooper/Paramedic Hunter R. Bennett were pronounced deceased on the scene.
No additional injuries were reported.
The AZDPS Major Incident Division will lead the investigation into the officer-involved shooting. The helicopter crash will be investigated jointly by AZDPS, the Federal Aviation Administration, and the National Transportation Safety Board. The investigation remains ongoing.
