At 1109 PM Thursday night, Flagstaff Police, Guardian Medical Transport, and Flagstaff Fire Department Battalion Chief 1, Engine 5, Rescue 2, and Engine 2 were dispatched to a report of a drowning at Frances Short Pond. CPR is in progress. This is the second drowning today in the Flagstaff area. Another drowning happened this morning at the Upper Lake Mary Boat Ramp.

A 21-year-old Flagstaff man died after being pulled from Frances Short Pond late Thursday night, marking the second drowning emergency Flagstaff-area first responders handled in less than 16 hours.
According to the Flagstaff Police Department, officers and firefighters were dispatched to Frances Short Pond, 755 N. Bonito St., at approximately 11:09 p.m. Thursday for a possible drowning.
Police identified the victim as Nathan Stands Jr., 21, of Flagstaff.
Stands was located submerged in the water. First responders began lifesaving efforts after he was pulled from the pond, and he was transported to Flagstaff Medical Center, where he later died.
Flagscanner reported the incident as it unfolded late Thursday night. Multiple Flagstaff Fire Department units, Guardian Medical Transport and Flagstaff Police responded to the scene, and a rescue raft was requested as crews worked at the pond.
The Flagstaff Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division responded to process the scene. Police said the circumstances surrounding the drowning remain under investigation.
The incident was the second drowning emergency reported in the Flagstaff area Thursday.
Earlier that morning, at approximately 8:37 a.m., Coconino County Sheriff’s deputies, Guardian Medical Transport and Flagstaff Fire Department crews were dispatched to the Upper Lake Mary boat ramp after a person was reportedly pulled from the water and CPR was initiated.
Additional emergency crews were sent to the scene, and the patient was later transported by ambulance to Flagstaff Medical Center. Further information regarding that patient’s condition has not yet been released.
The two incidents occurred at separate locations and there is no indication they are connected.
