Coconino County, AZ; The 2024 Memorial Day Weekend, encompassing May 24-27, resulted in a significant increase in calls for service and incidents stemming from holiday weekend activities throughout Northern Arizona. Sheriff’s Deputies worked closely with Officers from the United States Forest Service, National Park Service, Arizona Game and Fish, and other Northern Arizona public safety agencies to address the increased outdoor activity as well as general calls for service. Proactive patrols throughout Coconino County effectively increased the level of safety in the community we serve. When not handling calls for service, CCSO concentrated on enforcement measures relating to off-highway vehicle (OHV) operations along with highway safety. For the period of July May 24 through May 27 deputies responded to 827 calls for service, including both citizen and officer-initiated activities.
Here are some notes on statistics and other noteworthy events that occurred over the weekend:
Traffic Stops/ Traffic Enforcement: Deputies throughout the county conducted 107 traffic stops during the holiday weekend, resulting in 20 arrests and 40 citations.
Off Road Vehicle (OHV) Activity: Deputies contacted 34 Off Highway Vehicles (OHV) over the
weekend. There were 7 OHV related crashes that CCSO responded to in the county. Deputies issued 10 OHV related citations.
Impaired Driving: Deputies made 8 arrests for driving while impaired. 3 of the 8 arrests were for Aggravated DUI(felony). The other 5 DUI arrests resulted in misdemeanor charges. The average breath alcohol of the suspects arrested was .160 BrAC, twice the legal limit in Arizona.
Boat Contacts: CCSO Deputies on boat patrol contacted 45 vessels over the weekend on Lake Powell. These contacts resulted in 1 citation and several warnings.
Community Emergency Response Team (CERT): The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office CERT volunteers staffed three informational checkpoints to provide OHV safety and fire safety brochures to the public. The areas included Forest Road 240 near Munds Park, Cinder Lakes, and at Dogtown Lake in Williams.
Other Noteworthy Incidents:
• On Saturday, May 25, CCSO Deputies responded to the area of Pioneer Valley Estates for a report of a domestic violence incident in which the suspect stole an OHV belonging to a family member. There were several CCSO deputies as well as other law enforcement officers searching for the suspect in the area for a couple of hours. The suspect was taken into custody later that evening and booked into the Coconino County Jail for several charges.
• Deputies assisted the Flagstaff Police Department and other local law enforcement agencies with significant incidents occurring in their jurisdictions.
Detention Facility: The Coconino County Detention Facility Flagstaff Facility receives arrested persons from Coconino Sheriff’s Office, Flagstaff Police Department, Northern Arizona University Police, Page Police, Williams Police, Arizona Department of Public Safety, and state and federal agencies in the area such as the National Park Service, US Forest Service, and Arizona Game and Fish.
