FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — The City of Flagstaff is moving forward with the next phase of its Spruce Wash Flood Mitigation projects, marking another major step in protecting local neighborhoods and businesses from post-wildfire flooding.

Beginning October 13, city crews will start construction on the Killip Basin Outlet Structure, which will require a full closure of 6th Avenue between 1st Street and Main Street. The closure is expected to last approximately one month, depending on weather conditions.

Detours and Access

During the closure, detour routes will be in place along East Street, 4th Avenue, 3rd Street, and Dortha Avenue. These routes will maintain access to businesses, homes, and WF Killip Elementary School within the affected area.
Pedestrian pathways will remain open, and sidewalk access will be maintained. Drivers and walkers are encouraged to follow posted detour signage to reach their destinations safely.

About the Killip Basin Outlet Structure

The new storm drain structure will connect the Killip School Regional Detention Basins to an existing pipe along Main Street. This secondary outlet will help manage larger storm events, ensuring that water does not overtop the basins and reducing the risk of flooding in nearby neighborhoods.

Project Nearing Completion

City officials say this project represents one of the final pieces of the Spruce Wash Flood Mitigation Suite, which has been years in the making. Once completed, the improvements will significantly reduce post-wildfire flood impacts to homes and businesses in the area.

Residents are thanked for their patience as construction nears its final stages.
